  1. I googled to start my long search for gluten free ham that I could purchase at my local store, Safeway. I was directed to your site, and VOILA!!! it was all there and more! Thank you thank you thank you thank you!! It was wonderful to have a list of everything it makes shoppingmuch much easier and I also can purchase more things. Thank you again!!! This is a wonderful surprise and treat!

    Keep up the great work!!
I have been a shopper with Safeway for over 30 years and was once an employee, and I always found and still find Safeway above the rest in all departments.

  2. Why is soya sauce listed, when it contains wheat? Yes, there are some special types that don’t contain wheat, but that’s not the case for most. How accurate are these other items if an error that big has been made?

    • Thanks for the comment Ella. The list on our site was provided by Safeway directly. As with any list, users should use their own discretion as to what they try. For example, I’ve had issues with supposedly gluten-free grains, but as they were processed in a location that also processes wheat , I won’t chance it anymore.

As for soy, from this list Safeway says they are gluten-free. Has anyone else reading this post tried Safeway soy to share their experience with it?

  3. I was wondering if this list still applies, it is 2011, and I haven’t been able to call. Do you think that all of this is still gluten free?

    • Thanks for the prompt Delaney. We have not received any updates from Safeway since this was posted nor does Safeway have a gluten-free product listing on its web site. I’ll try and call the number and see if I can get an update.

Having said that, whether it is on this list or not, we must always check the label, even if it is a known item as manufacturers, including Safeway Select, can change their ingredients without warning.

We are pleased that by August 2012 all food product manufacturers (except for beer) must list key allergens on all their products, including gluten. I’ve noticed that some are already complying.

I hope this helps! In the meantime, I would continue to use the above list as a guideline but check the label to make sure. Many food products have 1-800 numbers on them so you can phone from the store to double check.

  4. looking for gluten free bread called ener gy bread made with tapioca flour and sold at safeway in bc. anyone know of this??

  5. I wish our Safeways in Regina and Saskatoon knew more about this. They are so vague about these products I hesitate to purchase them. I am still looking for a gluten free turkey. While I was directed to the deli meats and the actual butcher there was still exclaiming he never heard of turkeys having gluten. So I waved the deli meat package with what..6 thin slices of turkey and said, so if some turkeys are not ingested with gluten, then why have you got regular and gluten free turkey deli meats then? He had no answer.
