Our family has had the pleasure of knowing the McMillan family for several years. It all started when we took Julia and Hannah to the Kelowna McMillan Farm for a hay ride and pumpkins in the Pumpkin Patch’s inaugural year. It is now a family tradition to visit the farm at least once (usually several times) in the month of October to partake in all the farm has to offer.
Many of you do not know the McMillan’s but they are truly a giving family. Each year they choose a charity and raise funds through various activities during the month of October. Last year they chose the Kelowna Celiac Association and supported Drew for his Cycling for Celiac ride. Not only did they promote awareness to thousands of visitors, they raised $174.06 in a sucker contest (for a $0.25 donation you pulled a sucker out of a board – if it had a black dot on the end you won a prize). There were a total of 696 suckers sold!
The 2009 Cycling for Celiacs ride raised $45,000 which was the highest amount ever raised in one year. These funds are all dedicated to research and as we are all aware we are on the verge of a gluten blocker pill, vaccine, and many other exciting discoveries.
The McMillan Farm is located at #1 -3690 Berard Road, Kelowna, BC and their website is: www.mcmillanfarms.ca. Here is an excerpt from their webpage:
“ Whether it’s getting lost in our 10′ – 12′ tall corn maze, purchasing some beautiful multi-coloured corn and gourds for Thanksgiving, the big pumpkin for your Halloween spookatacular or that perfect Christmas tree, we have it all for you! So come on out with your friends and family and create some special family memories with us on our beautiful farm. While you’re here, don’t miss out on the best hayride in the Okanagan, where you get to see horses, cattle, sheep and goats with special appearances (at a time of their choosing) by our coyotes, blue herons, swamp monster, hawks, white tail deer and more”.
Please drop in, let them know that you heard about them through the Kelowna Celiac Association and thank them for their generous donation.
