Dog warns owner of gluten in food



Ever heard of a gluten sniffing dog?  You have now…

A young woman in the U.S. who suffers from severe celiac disease has a service dog that alerts her to gluten in food.  When it’s time for the dog to do a sniff test the owner places a cover over the food with holes on it.  The dog then sniffs.   If there’s gluten, the dog tries to pull it away.  If it’s safe the dog just looks away.

The dog used is a Beauceron, said to be an old nearly extinct breed, and was trained in Slovenia with its owner.  The owner must also practice daily with gluten containing foods to ensure the dog doesn’t lose its training.
