March 2011 West Kootenay Satellite Meeting
Seven in attendance – four regrets
We welcomed three new members – Trevor, McQ’s chef, Laura, new GF baker and Ria.
1. Jane handed out revised brochure listing – new one will go out before summer season
McQ’s is experimenting with having rice balls instead of bread for all customers!
More and more local restaurants are printing GF menus – Hume, Outer Clove and Kurama Sushi for starters (just ask).
Make sure to ask if restaurants use dedicated fryers for fries or other hopefully GF foods – Amanda’s doesn’t always.
Add ITZA, 413 Hall Street, Nelson, BC V1L 1Y9, (250) 352-3573 – great salads and GF pizza
2. Chocofellers Chocolates on 625 Front (suite 203) in Nelson have all GF chocolates (but one).
3. We tried out different breads starting with three of Laura’s new creations – a quick bread, a multi grain and a cranberry. She’ll be selling at various summer markets and hopefully other stores.
Don brought his home made bread – very healthy and great toasted – recipe to follow soon. Trevor uses a mix for now – Gluten Free Pantry brand. Marilyn buys ‘Food for Life’ and Nell and Jean like Maggie’s Home Style Multi Seed bread, available at the Kootenay Co-op.
Jane talked about the Betty Crocker GF brands including bisquick now available in the US. Safeway in the states is also advertizing that they are going to be labeling shelves like Choices does in Kelowna – is Canada far behind?
Don will arrange for a time and date for a May meeting and we are hoping for a potluck at Jane’s in the summer.
Next meeting – bring your favourite GF cook book
