Calgary Flames player has Celiac, will help Calgary Chapter

Calgary Flames and Canadian Celiac Association Press Release

The Calgary Flames and Flames forward Tom Kostopoulos along with the Canadian Celiac Association (CCA) are proud to announce Kostopoulos has partnered as a spokesman for the Calgary chapter of the Canadian Celiac Association.

Kostopoulos will donate $100.00 per goal during the regular season to CCA as well as tickets to youth in the Calgary chapter of CCA programs. After these games he will meet with the ticket recipients in the locker room.

“I am honoured to be involved with the Celiac Association,” said Kostopoulos. “Being a celiac myself, I know how difficult it can be for kids. I am looking forward to meeting youth through the association and participating in their programs.”

The gritty Flames forward in his second season with Calgary will also be attending CCA events and programs to interact with program members throughout the season.

The Canadian Celiac Association (CCA) is a national organization representing persons with Celiac Disease. The Calgary Chapter of the CCA provides advice and support to persons with Celiac Disease across Southern Alberta.

Celiac disease (CD) is a permanent intolerance to gluten, a protein found in various wheats (e.g., durum, kamut, spelt), rye, barley and triticale. Gluten consumption causes damage to the absorptive surface of the small intestine and can result in malnutrition, anemia, nutritional deficiencies and an increased risk of other diseases including osteoporosis and specific cancers of the gut.

All Flames players continue to be actively involved in Flames Foundation for Life and community programs such as Pond Hockey by Enmax Energy, Flames Ambassador Celebrity Charity Poker Tournament, Danone SuperSkills, Alberta Children Hospital wheelchair hockey and holiday visits along with various charitable and community appearances. Many have also adopted programs of support on their own.
