President’s Report February / March 2013

By Irene Thompson, Chapter President

It will be so nice to see everyone once again at our potluck  meeting on March 3rd. It seems like a long time since we have all been together.

I would like to thank all those who attended our Christmas dinner and supported our chapter. This is a fund-raiser as well as a chance to have a great meal prepared by your executive.

I also want to thank the outgoing executive for all their hard work and dedication to our chapter. I also want to welcome the new executive to their positions. I am sure that you will all have some great ideas that will move our chapter forward.

I also would like to congratulate David Fowler who received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal from the CCA for all his work on the 2012 conference. Moyra Baxter also received the same medal for her many years of volunteer work with a variety of organizations. Once again, congratulation to both for all your hard work and dedication.

Clarence and I just came back from a fourteen day vacation. I sure am finding that it so much easier to travel as a celiac these days. You just never know where you are going to find great gluten-free food available. We discovered that there is a lovely Bistro right in Winfield that had gluten-free pasta and penning available. ( L’iola Bella Bistro) What a nice surprise that was.

Emerald Princess

The gluten-free food on the Emerald Princess was great. There was nothing that they would not try to make for me. In fact as so often happens, my food was better than the regular menu in many cases. In Fort Lauderdale we stopped at a lovely sidewalk café for a drink and some apies and were so well treated that we later went back and had a gluten-free dinner. I didn’t have a reaction to any of the food and for me this is great as I am very sensitive.

I guess what I am saying is please do not be afraid to go out and eat and enjoy all the great gluten-free food that is available to us. This disease should not control you, you control it.

Air Canada offered gluten-free crackers and cheese another nice surprise. I would encourage you all to support all the facilities that offer gluten-free items.

I look forward to seeing you all once again this Sunday!

Volunteers needed for Kelowna 2012

by Irene Thompson – President Kelowna Chapter
Once again “hello” to everyone!

Irene ThompsonI hope that you are enjoying the nice days that we have had. May is here and as you all know this is Celiac Awareness Month. This year our awareness is focused on getting information out to all the dentists.

Marie has sent out the information via e-mail to you and I would request that you take this information to your dentist ASAP along with information about the conference. We have a dentist speaking at our conference and this would be a great opportunity to hear just how celiac disease affects our teeth. I will also print off the information so that the members that do not have e-mail can have a copy.

We will need your help with the Conference so please we need you to volunteer to help. I will have sign-up sheets at the potluck as will Moyra so please pitch in and help.

David, Moyra, Jessica, Ann and I as well as others have been working very hard to make this conference a success however we can’t do it all we are counting on you.

I am looking forward to seeing everyone once again Sunday (May 6th) as well as looking forward to our potluck lunch it is always a treat.
